Joomla Questions

Several people had questions about the Joomla option in your control panel at HostJacker. You may have heard about this content management system before, but some of you didn’t know exactly what it was and how it fit into building your own website. Here are some answers for you.
1. Yes, you can use Joomla to build your entire site. Besides the free templates available at HostJacker, there are hundreds of more free ones available. Check out www.joomla.org.
2. The parts of your website are built as modules, stacked and arranged around each other and interlinked. This gives you great flexibility to easily make changes.
3. To change the whole look of your site, you simply change templates. Like using css (but easier) all of your content stays intact.
4. Joomla is easy to use, once you know what you’re doing! The first time I tried to use it, I found the script a bit tricky to install (HostJacker makes this part easy, its pre-installed and just a few clicks of your mouse activates it). Also, setting up your modules and putting in your content are difficult until you understand how Joomla works, then its a piece of cake.

Personally, I didn’t find the basic stuff on joomla.org much help, and after struggling and pulling my hair out for 2 days, I found a post on a forum I was searching that led me to a series of videos and guides that made it all seem so simple. After watching the videos, I accomplished more in an hour than I had in 2 days, and finishing the site was easy and quick. The guides come with the videos, as a bonus, and the whole package is called “Joomla Kahuna”.

If you are thinking about using Joomla to build your site, its a great way to crank out several websites quick and easy. But, if you’ve never used Joomla before, I really suggest you spend an hour or two watching the videos and reading the guides. Here’s something a little different you can leave popped up in a corner of your screen while your at work or doing something else on your computer. It’s a free webcam focused on a watering hole in Africa. It can be boring when nothing is happening, but leave it shunk down in one corner and soon enough you’ll see something start to happen. Remeber, it’s about 6 hours later there than East coast U.S.A time. But it still shows at night there. I just went to look, and there were three rhinos drinking and mulling around. Way cool. Well this post will be short and sweet.  First, sorry about the lag time since my last post, but personal matters have kept me occupied the last month or so. 

And here’s a link to a site with lots of free online games, including my favorite, the 3D chess game.  Most online versions of chess don’t seem to have this 3D feature, and I find it much more difficult to view the board in 2D from above, and still play well.  Too many years of playing on a real world board, I guess.  This site is MSN Games, and you can click below to get there.

There is a quick sign-up required (no credit card needed), and a small (apparently safe) ActiveX control to download, but its all free, and there are alot of good fun games in the free section of the site.  So, go visit the site, find a game you like, and have fun.

If you’ve been working just a little on your website, and you’ve registerred a domain name and signed up for your free or cheap webhosting at Hostroute or 1&1, now all you need is a way to get your brand new site from your computer to your new online home.  The FTP utility I use is a freeware version that is reliable and really easy to use.  It’s called Filezilla, and you can download the latest version 2.2.25 by using the link below.  Make sure you remember where you downloaded the file!  I created a new folder under My Received Files and called it “Filezilla”.

Once you download the file, just unzip it (using WinZip, or download it here, if you don’t already have it), and follow the install instructions.  Then just open Filezilla by clicking on the desktop icon, click File, and choose Site Manager… from the menu.  In the Site Manager box input all of your sites info, name (www.yoursite.com), and the user name and password for your site.  This is usually set up by the web site provider, and you can then change your password to anything you’d like.  For Servertype, use FTP and under Logontype choose Normal.  The Port is usually 21, but Filezilla should find it for you.

Next, click the Connect button at the bottom of the box, and Filezilla will log you on to your website.  Find the file with your website in it in the left hand  top pane of the Filezilla screen (should be saved under My Documents/website or website name, whatever you chose) and open it by clicking on it.  The contents will be shown in the bottom left pane.  Now click on the public_html file in the right hand pane to open it.  Highlight all of the files in your website folder (click on top one and use down arrow while holding the shift key down to highlight all of them), then right click on the highlighted files and choose Upload from the menu.  All of your files will be automatically uploaded to your website.  Just make sure that your file for your main first page is named index.html, (hightlight it and rightclick on it to rename it, if necessary), and then disconnect (under File button on top row) and close Filezilla. 

Your new site should be up and running, and you can visit it by opening IE and typing in the address.  Make sure to check all of your links and buttons, to make sure they’re working, and start sending people to your new site!
